Every April, Ray Abell of Nishikigoi of Niigata in Richmond, Virginia releases koi into his 3 mud ponds to be one with nature. The koi are harvested the following November, with great celebration. For the spring events, Ray will often invite a few people to join him. The koi are inspected, measured and photographed before being released into the mud ponds. Ray sometimes shares his knowledge about koi with us. I captured some of those discussions on video. Ray’s passion and understanding of koi and koi keeping is unprecedented, in my opinion. To view some of Ray’s exceptional koi: www.nishikigoiofniigata.com
One of the highlights on this day was seeing an 88cm Kohaku bred by Marudo.
Once the koi have been harvested, they are placed in show vats for inspection, measuring and viewing. Many of the koi were purchased prior to the harvest. The remaining koi are either sold or moved to concrete ponds for “polishing”.
This video was shot on day 2 at the Nishikigoi of Niigata koi harvest in Richmond, Virginia. Less wind and rain today, but still no sun. Didn’t seem to bother us though. Some 2 year olds, mostly 3 and 4 year old koi were harvested from pond 2. The koi had been in the mud pond since April. It was incredible to see how much some of the koi grew. Some almost 6 inches! There were some nice kohaku among others. For more koi harvest videos visit www.youtube.com
Every November Ray Abell of Nishikigoi of Niigata harvests the koi in his 3 mud ponds. Ray imports high-grade koi from Japan and in the spring, stocks his mud ponds with the koi, to be one with nature. The koi experience incredible growth. Most spectacular are the large koi harvested from Pond 3 on day 3. For this harvest, Ray allowed me to get quite close, to get some great shots of the massive koi. It is a wonderful event, that I’ve been attending for many years.
I attended the Nishikigoi of Niigata koi harvest in Richmond, Virginia late November of last year. A hurricane off the coast sent some heavy rain and wind our way on days 1 and 2. It was also quite cool. But everyone still had a great time. On the first day, 2 year olds were harvested from pond 1. We saw some great kohaku, sanke and chagoi, among others.
In November of last year, I attended the Nishikigoi of Niigata fall koi harvest in Richmond, Virginia. It is a 3 day event. On the third day, the largest koi are harvested from pond 3. An 88 cm kohaku, the largest kohaku Ray has ever grown, was among the koi harvested. This was an incredible animal to see. There were many other wonderful koi as well. I’m currently working on more videos for Day 3.
There were some monster sized koi in pond 3. This is another video, cut using footage shot at the Nishikigoi of Niigata fall koi harvest, day 3, in November 2008. Many exceptional koi were harvested on this day. Particularly outstanding was a Dainichi Sanke (the first koi in the video) and a Sakai of Hiroshima Sanke appearing later in the video (Bay and Bryan Bateman’s koi). This koi has gone on to win a number of awards at koi shows, including 2009 Koi America champion. The harvest was a great event I was delighted to attend.
