Actually IN the pond they are koi food, in the FILTERS they are an annoyance as they can clog it up. If snails aren’t already in the pond , DON’T add them.
Algae that grows on the side of the koi pond is good for the koi and the pond. The floating algae and the kind that makes the water opaque green are not good and the snails don’t get rid of those kind at anyway.
You would need a different tactic to get rid of those kinds of algae.
I think people got the idea of using snails for algae control in aquariums where it grows on the glass and makes it hard to see the fish. It’s only for aesthetics as the algae that grows on the glass doesn’t hurt the fish at all. In the pond it’s not a problem.
You don’t need algae eaters either, and in the colder parts of the U.S.A. they would die over the winter anyway.
